De La Salle University’s women’s volleyball program will have a new setter in UAAP 80 season, according to Camille Naredo of Abs.cbn.com. Michelle Cobb, a long-time reserve to Kim Fajardo, will take on the team’s offensive duties. Cobb will have big shoes to fill, as Fajardo led the Lady Spikers to two consecutive UUAP championships, while winning Best Setter and Best Server honors in the process, before exhausting her eligibility.
The 18-year-old Cobb had the privilege to develop her game under one of the nation’s best setters in Fajardo. Cobb has admitted to have looked to Fajardo for counseling about what she is going through, and that the veteran play-maker assured her that these struggles are normal, herself having to go through them.
By all accounts, Cobb is ready to lead the team, as she has already debuted in various preseason tournaments. She has total support from La Salle’s technical staff. However, it is only natural that a lot of fans will question her ability, specially as she will replace one of the program’s best setters to date. She admits that she is still adjusting to her new role:
Last year, my role was to deliver quality minutes. My coach made it clear that I should accept a very big role on offense, because Fajardo left a really big mark. The pressure I am feeling is normal, given the legacy that Fajardo left. I’m taking it one game at a time.
In her debut this week, Cobb exceeded expectations by delivering 37 of the team’s 44 excellent sets in the Lady Spikers’ 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-8, win over University of Santo Tomas.
