Pool play wrapped up and the final eight spots in the Round of 16 were decided on Thursday at the Kish Island Three Star.
Five of the eight first round matches went the distance, with Maxime Thiercy/Arnaud Gauthier-Rat (France), Haralds Regza/Kristaps Smits (Latvia), Olivier Barthelemy/Romain Di Giantommaso (France), Nils Ehlers/Lorenz Schumann (German), and Martin Ermacora/Moritz Pristauz (Austria) coming out on top.
All but Ermacora/Pristauz had to rebound after dropping the opening stanza. Two of the sides began in qualifiers – Barthelemy/Di Giantommaso and Alexander Walkenhorst/Sven Winter (Germany) – bringing the list of qualifiers in the second round to five.
Christoph Dressler/Robin Seidl (Austria), Dirk Boehle/Steven Van De Velde (Netherlands), and Walkenhorst/Winter won in straight sets. The Germans’ win was not without drama, however, as Set 1 went to a 30-28 score.
The group moves on to join the following pool winners in Friday’s second round: Andrea Abbiati/Tiziano Andreatta (Italy), Arnas Rumsevicius/Lukas Kazdailis (Lithuania), Konstantin Semenov/Ilya Leshukov (Russia), Martins Plavins/Edgars Toc (Latvia), Alex Ranghieri/Marco Caminati (Italy),ariusz Prudel/Jakub Sazalnkiewicz (Poland), Julian Horl/Tobias Winter (Austria) and Ade Rachmawan Candra/Mohammad Ashfiya (Indonesia).
Americans Bill Kolinske/Miles Evans won in pool play but were knocked out of the competition in Round 1, falling to Thiercy/Gauthier-Rat.
Stafford Slick/Casey Patterson lost in straight sets in their final pool play match to end their stay at the tournament.
