Canada’s Heather Bansley/Brandie Wilkerson became the second Top 10 women’s seed to falter in pool play as the No. 10 duo fell to No. 23 seed Joy Stubbe/Marleen van Iersel of the Netherlands in three sets on Thursday afternoon.
The American women went 2-2 on the day, with No. 13 April Ross/Alix Klineman winning in straight sets and No. 17 Kerri Walsh Jennings/Nicole Branaugh overcoming a Set 1 loss in their return from Walsh Jennings’ offseason surgery for a tiebreak victory.
New duos Kelly Claes/Brittany Hochevar and Kelley Larsen/Emily Stockman were not as fortunate, each falling in straight sets.
Thursday night offered redemption for the morning’s losing sides in men’s action. Four of the eight matches saw the victors have to fight through three sets to claim their first main draw win of the tournament.
Belgium’s Dries Koekelkoren/Tom van Walle, Qatar’s Cherif Younousse/Ahmed Tijan and Austria’s Alexander Horst/Clemens Doppler had to rally for their victories, while Czech pair Ondrej Perusic/David Schweiner hung on for the three-set win.
Third seeded Horst and Doppler battled through a 38-36 loss to Juan Virgen/Lombardo Ontiveros of Mexico to pull off 21-14 and 15-13 responses to avoid a second straight upset.
Pool play picks up again at 8 p.m. ET Thursday and continues through midnight. Round 1 play will follow.
