Pool A action at the Pan American Cup got under way on Sunday with a pair of sweeps. First up, Canada bested Peru in a daytime match, then the host Dominican Republic downed Costa Rica 3-0.
Canada 3, Peru 0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-17)
Autumn Bailey and Kiera Van Ryk downed double-digit kill efforts to lead Canada past Peru. VanRyk served up eight aces and chipped in 10 kills, while Bailey turned in 11 kills and a block. Emily Baglio added eight points.
“I am very happy for the result and proud about the performance of my young players like Van Ryk who is only 18 years-old,” Canadian coach Marcello Abbondanza said. “They were nervous in the first set but we have many players without international experience.”
Karla Ortiz was the top scorer for Peru, notching nine points on six kills, two blocks and an ace. Yujhamy Mosquera tacked on four putaways.
Canadian miscues kept Peru in the game as the team gave away 11 points on errors. For its part, Peru committed 19 errors. Canada bested the Peruvians 41-25 in kills, 5-2 in blocks and 10-2 in aces.
“A little bit sad because we played a good first set but were not able to close it,” Peruvian captain Clarivett Ylescas said. “Their serves put a lot of pressure after the second set. Our team is better than that and I expect to improve.”
Dominican Republic 3, Costa Rica 0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-16)
The Dominican Republic utilized 13 of its 14 players in a sweep of Costa Rica with 11 of them scoring in the match.
The Dominicans outdid the Costa Ricans in every way: kills (41-21), blocks (11-1) and aces (6-1) in the start to finish victory.
Gina Mambru Casilla was the top scorer with 11 points on seven kills, two blocks and two aces. Bethania De Laz Cruz De Pena tacked on nine points, including a team-best eight kills, while Prisilla Rivera Brens added seven kills. Gaila Gonzalez Lopez put up a team-leading three blocks, while Yonkaira Pena Isabel served up two of the team’s six aces.
Tannia Carazo Martinez led the Costa Ricans with nine points, all on kills. Johanna Gamboa and Mariana Rodriguez chipped in five points apiece. Rodriquez accounted for five kills, while Gamboa added four kills and a block.
