Barueri has announced in its official Instagram page that it has extended ties with Katarzyna Skowronska for next season. The 6’2″ 35-year-old Polish opposite will undergo her second season in Brazil, but is a long time work partner of coach José Roberto Guimarães. Here are her first words regarding the news:
“I am very happy to return to Barueri and become part of this one team again. I am happy to be back in Brazil. In these few months out, I missed this place and the people I met during my first season. I’m excited to start training and preparing for the next Superleague. I have new teammates and I’m excited to get to know them better. I hope our team will become a very strong group for the new challenges.”
Coach Guimarães was likewise very happy to have his star pupil back:
“I’m glad to have Skowronska again in Barueri. Last season, she recovered from a knee surgery and progressed well throughout the Superliga, being instrumental in the season’s second half and playoff games. She will soon join us to start off the pre-season. Skowronska is a great athlete, with a lot of technical quality, and will continue to add a lot to Barueri, passing on her experience to the new players. I hope we can have a great season together.”
After many doubted she could still play at a high level due to her ACL surgery and long recovery time with Barueri, Skownronska proved in the end of the regular season and playoffs that she is still an offensive powerhouse. Although Barueri went 13-9 in the regular season, good enough for 5th place, and fell in the Round-of-8 to Osasco, there is no doubt that if “Kasia” had joined the team earlier, she would have powered it to a much better performance. Now fully recovered, she’ll have the chance to play a full season with the team in what will probably be the swam song of a very successful career.
