There is no doubt that PlusLiga’s Szczecin is going all out for its next season. After finishing 10-20 in 2017/18, the team netted a new master sponsor, changed back to its 80’s name, and set its eyes on setting up a superteam. The latest chapter of its goals was adding a trio of new signings: Canada’s Nicholas Hoag, Bulgaria’s Nikolay Penchev, and Polish youngster Bartosz Firszt.
The 26-year-old 6’6″ outside hitter Hoag is transferring out of Italy’s Diatec Trentino, where he scored 3.32 points per set last season on 50.3% hitting and 20.3% receiving. Hoag also had succesfull stint in France with Tours VB and has been a staple in Team Canada since 2003. Penchev, also a 26-year-old outside hitter, is a known face to Polish fans, having played in PlusLiga since 2013 with Kielce, Resovia, and Skra. He has also played in Italy with Piacenza and has been a constant in Bulgaria’s national team since 2010. Penchev is a PlusLiga career 26.8% receiver and 45.6% hitter on 2.31 points per set. Lastly, The 19-year-old 6’5″ Firszt will undergo his first senior PlusLiga season. He is the captain of Poland’s U20 squad.
While Hoag will contend for serious court time, Penchev will serve as a luxury back up, while Firzt’s major worry will be further developing his game. With its deep roster, Szczecin should have no problem contending for the title next season. To follow the team’s offseason, click the links below:
