Victory in the West Coast Conference belonged mostly to the road team Thursday night as three of the four matches saw the visiting team leave with a win. In San Francisco, it was #1 BYU, who was once again challenged in the second and third sets, but left with a sweep. In Stockton, Portland did not commit an attack error until the third set in sweeping the Pacific Tigers. Despite being winless in the conference Santa Clara battled San Diego tough in all three sets before falling to the Toreros. The only team to win at home was Saint Mary’s, who swept visiting Gonzaga.

- Middle blocker Addie Picha was the star for San Diego, tossing in 11 kills, while hitting .647, and adding six blocks.
- Setter Anna Newsome nearly had a double-double for the Toreros, finishing with 23 assists and nine digs.
- The Broncos were led by Michelle Shaffer, who tallied 11 kills and nine digs.
- Santa Clara hit .257 for the match and held San Diego to .252 in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
San Diego picked up its fifth conference win Thursday night after surviving a dogfight from the Broncos at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara.
The Toreros were outhit, but managed to pull out the sweep in three highly contested sets.
In the opener, it was Santa Clara who raced out to an early lead. The Broncos led 7-2, before a 5-0 San Diego run tied the match. Santa Clara then led 14-10 and later 20-18, but was unable to hold onto the lead. The Toreros ended the first set on a 7-2 spurt to grab a 25-22 win.
The second set was tight from start to finish. San Diego grabbed the lead at 5-4 and managed to keep a slim edge over Santa Clara throughout most of the set. After trailing 21-18, Santa Clara fought back to tie the set at 21 with a 3-0 run. The Broncos would tie it at 23 and 24 before San Diego captured the final two points for a 26-24 victory.

San Diego looked like it was going to cruise in the third after jumping out to an 8-2 lead out of the gate. But the Broncos chipped away, pulling to within one at 8-7 and later tying it up at 15 apiece. The Toreros drew match point at 24-22, but Santa Clara evened the score. San Diego would survive, after back-to-back kills by Addie Picha ended the set and the match.

- BYU moves to 17-0, 7-0 WCC; San Francisco falls to 8-10, 1-6 WCC

- Outside hitter McKenna Miller led the way for the top-ranked Cougars. Miller threw down 11 kills while hitting .281. Fellow outside hitter Roni Jones-Perry added nine kills, but only hit 174 with five attack errors.
- Cougars’ setter Lyndie Haddock-Eppich added a double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs.
- San Francisco was led by right side hitter Emily Zinger, who tallied 10 kills.
- BYU hit just .202 as a team, but held the Dons to just .102.
PORTLAND DEF. PACIFIC 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-22)
- Portland moves to 16-4, 4-4; Pacific drops to 6-13, 1-6 in the WCC.

- The Pilots were led by outside hitter Reghan Pukis, who tallied 11 kills and hit .423. Middle blocker Liz Reich notched 10 kills while hitting .500.
- Portland registered 33 kills in 65 total attacks before committing its first attack error. The Pilots hit .537 through the first two sets and committed their first attack error with the scored tied at 7 in the third set.
- The Pilots made three errors in the third set and hit . 444 for the match while limiting the Tigers to .202.
- Pacific was led by outside hitters Kaitlin Lines, who tallied 14 kills, and Riley Ramsey, who added 12.
SAINT MARY’S DEF. GONZAGA 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-19)
- Saint Mary’s improves to 12-5, 4-3; Gonzaga dips to 6-12, 3-4 in the WCC.

- Outside hitters Sarah Chase and Lindsey Knudsen led the way for the Gaels as both notched 10 kills.
- Gonzaga was led by outside hitter Sarah Penner, who finished with a double-double. Penner registered 14 kills and 10 digs.
- Saint Mary’s finished at .295 as a team while Gonzaga was held to .204.
