USA’s Newberry/Sparks Lose Semis, Will Battle For Bronze At 2018 YOGs

USA’s Devon Newberry / Lindsey Sparks fought hard, very hard. But in the end, it wasn’t enough, as the Italian duo Scampoli/Bertozzi triumphed 2-0 (21-16, 21-19) against them on their way to clinching a Finals berth in Buenos Aires. The defeat comes in an even sourer note for the American team, as it came from the hands of the same Italian duo that it defeated earlier this year at the U19 World Championship. Still, being the tournament’s 16th seed, Newberry and Sparks should be very happy and satisfied with their performance.

Scampoli/Bertozzi will now go on to face current U19 world Champions Veronina/Boncharova in the competition’s finals. Newberry/Sparks will fight for the bronze medal against Norway’s Olimstad/Berntsen.

In the boys’ competition, Sweden’s Ahman/Hellvig defeated Hungary’s Streli/Hajos 2-0 (21-9, 21/16) and will play the finals against Argentina’s Amieva/Zelayeta, who beat Dutch duo Groot/Immers 2-1 (20-22, 21-17, 15-12) to book their Finals ticket.
