BR Volleys Advances to CEV Final Four with 3-2 Stunner

Berlin Recycling Volleys punched its ticket to the Final Four with a 3-2 win over Dynamo Moscow in Moscow on Wednesday. The win is BR Volleys’ second straight five set comeback, winning 37-35, 22-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-8.

BR Volleys, of the German Bundesliga, also topped Dynamo Moscow, of the Russian Super League, in five sets after trailing 2-0 (23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-10) in the opening leg of the playoffs on April 5 in Berlin.

BR Volleys finished third in the 2015 Champions League competition, while playing host to the event.

On Thursday, the last two Final Four spots in Rome will be decided. After the opening leg of the playoffs last week, Cucine Lube Civitanova and defending CEV champion Zenit Kazan are in the driver’s seat.

Cucine Lube Civatanova , of the Italian Serie A, dropped its league rival Azimut Modena via sweep (25-23, 25-18, 29-27) in Modena. The teams will face off on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. ET in Civitanova, Italy.

The Azimut Modena roster includes Max Holt, a Penn State product and 2016 U.S. Olympic team member. Holt accounted for five points – three kills, one block and an ace – in last week’s match.

The Lube Civatanova roster includes setter Micah Christenson, who played collegiately at USC and is a member of the U.S. national team. Christenson managed two blocks against Modena.

Zenit Kazan, of the Russian Super League, started its Final Four push with a 3-1 win over league foe Belogorie Belgorod . Zenit Kazan, which won the CEV title in 2015 and 2016, won the match 25-14, 25-17, 23-25, 26-24 in Kazan, Russia. Belogorie won the CEV title in 2014.

Zenit features Matt Anderson, opposite from the 2016 U.S. Olympic team, who played collegiately at Penn State. Anderson accounted for 15 points in last week’s match, managing 12 kills and three aces.
