Based on the current points standings, the FIVB has announced the pre-draw placement for the men’s and women’s teams competing at the Beach World Championships in Vienna next month.
The drawing of lots will take place on July 1 in Porec, the location of the current FIVB World Tour stop, to determine the seedings and pool allocations. There are 96 teams competing in total at the World Championships, 48 men’s and 48 women’s teams. The pre-determined selections come based on the pair’s points for the tandems best six finishes of eight finishes on the FIVB World Tour over a period of 365 days.
The format of the tournament will split the 48 teams competing into 12 pools of four, with the top-12 being placed in the top slot of each pool. In the pool, each duo will play three pool play matches. The top two from each pool will advance directly to the round of 32, which will begin the elimination portion of the tournament. The remainder of the field going to the round of 32 will go to the four best third place pairs based on match points, set-point ratios and rally-point ratios. In a “Lucky Loser” round of the tournament, the teams ranked fifth through 12th will be played with the four winners advancing to the elimination bracket.
There is a total of 40 countries competing in the event, with seven sending a team or teams for the first time since the induction of the event in 1997. The first-time countries are – Colombia (one women’s team), Iran (men), Kenya (women), Mozambique (men and women), Rwanda (women), Sierra Leone (men) and Trinidad & Tobago (men).
