Aalsmeer Quarterfinals Set, Will Feature Three American Pairs

Alexia Richard and Margeaux Carrere of France were the only of the four qualifiers make it through the opening round of the main draw. The pair topped Dutch duo Emi Van Driel and Raiisa Schoon in three sets, rebounding from a 23-21 Set 1 loss to win 21-18, 15-8.

Also advancing in the main draw were American Emily Stockman/Kimberly DiCello and Betsi Flint/Kelley Larsen. Unfortunately the American pairs will face off in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

The Netherlands also put two duos through to the quarters as Joy Stubbe and Madelein Meppelink joined Richard/Carrer.

Rounding out the top eight are teams from Spain (Paula Soria/Amaranta Fernandez), Japan (Miki Ishii/Megumi Murakami), Germany (Kim Behrens/Sandra Ittlinger), and Romania (Adriana-Maria Matei/Beata Vaida).

Ishii/Murakami rallied from down a set to win 16-21, 21-14, 15-10, while Stockman/DiCello also went the distance.

 

On the men’s side, there were two rounds of qualification with the four opening day victors facing new foes in round 2. All of the day one winners fell, while Americans Bill Kolinske and Miles Evans rallied for a three-set win to move on. Ukraine’s Segiy Popov/Oleksii Denin, Germany’s Yannick Harms and Philipp Arne Bergmann and Turkey’s Murat Giginoglu and Hasan Huseyin Mermer advanced to the main draw with straight set wins.

Popov/Denin, Giginoglu/Mermer and Kolinske/Evans continued their run of success with wins in Round 1 of the main draw. The Americans won in straight sets over Daniel Bergerud/Svein Oddmund Solhaug of Norway.

The main draw featured five three-set affairs, including Popov/Denin against French pair Arnaud Loiseau/Olivier Barthelemy. Also on to the quarterfinals with tie-breaker wins were Italians Marco Caminati and Enrico Rossi, and a trio of Dutch pairs: Tom Van Steenis/Ruben Penninga, Jannes Van Der Ham/Sven Vismans, and Dirk Boehle/Steven Van de Velde.

Van Steenis/Penninga and Boehle/Van de Velde both rallied after dropping the opening sets.

“The second set went the way we like it,” Penninga said. “We were in full power. The third set seemed to be going the wrong way for us, but we said to each other that we had to follow our goal. We are aiming at the medals, so we need more sets like that second one.”
