Former Nevada middle blocker Shayla Hoeft is transferring out of the program and is headed to Portland in the West Coast Conference (WCC). Hoeft will be a junior in 2018 and will be eligible for this upcoming fall season with two years left of play.
A 6’2″ native of Kihei, Hawaii, Hoeft made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2016 and hit .306 – ninth best in a single-season in Nevada history. She also added 208 kills (1.86 per set) and 116 blocks (1.04 per set).
In year two last season, Hoeft recorded 258 kills (3.11 per set) on a .281 clip to go with 75 blocks (0.90 per set) en route to All-Mountain West Conference Honorable Mention honors.
“Shayla is an exceptional person and student-athlete,” Portland head coach Jeff Baxter said in the team’s press release. “It was obvious from our first conversations with Shayla that she would be a perfect fit for our program. Shayla is a gifted athlete and is fantastic at hitting behind the setter, which will be a huge asset to our team. We are excited about having her in our program these next two years and watching her grow as a volleyball player and a leader.”
Portland went 15-15 and 6-12 this past season in the WCC. They had two middle blockers on their 2017 roster that are both on pace to return and join Hoeft at the position in 2018. For Nevada, who went 10-20 and 8-10 in the MWC in 2017 they are now left with just one middle blocker in a redshirt freshman for 2018 plus any extra additions they make.
