American Athletic Conference Honors SMU’s Mills, Tulane’s McHugh

SMU outside hitter Lauren Mills and Tulane libero Kaylie McHugh earned the American Athletic Conference’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week nods.

Mills paced the Mustangs with 4.17 kills and 3.58 digs per set, while leading the team to the Creeds and Crests Classic title in San Marcos, Texas. The sophomore earned MVP honors after lifting SMU to wins over UTSA, Texas State and UMass Lowell.

The Keller, Texas, native racked up a career-best 27 kills against UTSA, matching the SMU program record for putaways in a four-set match, while also adding 13 digs and two aces. Mills then added a 15-kill, 19-dig double double and eight stuffs against Texas State. She wrapped up the weekend with 11 digs, eight kills and a team-leading five blocks against UML.

For her part, McHugh racked up 4.09 digs per set as Tulane moved to 8-2 on the year.

The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, guided the Green Wave to wins over Southern Miss, Nicholls State and Oklahoma en route to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic. Against Southern Miss, the sophomore paced Tulane with 12 digs, six assists and a team-best four aces. McHugh tallied a team-best 10 digs and six assists against Nicholls, and wrapped up the weekend with a team-leading 23 digs against the Sooners.
