American coach Air Padda, who currently coaches Adamson University at the Philippines, blasted UAAP volleyball match officials for allegedly missing a call that she believes could have cost her team the match against University of the East this weekend. Her team was up 12-11 at the tie break and appeared to have scored the breakaway point, but the refs allowed the raally to continue after UE’s Judith Abil got the ball back up with an attempted pancake save. Fortunately for Adamson, UE wasn’t able to convert on the dig, and Adamson got the break-point kill. Here is Padda’s reaction (Spin.ph):
“I do believe we almost lost the fifth set because of the bad refs. There was no pancake. Clearly, the ball was down. Abil wasn’t even close to getting a pancake. Thank God we got the point, but if we hadn’t gotten it, what would have happened? Then the score would have been 12-12. You cannot do that in the fifth set, and it pisses me off, it does.”
The controversy comes only a few days after Adamson narrowly lost a game to the University of the Philippines in a similar situation:
“I do believe we lost the fifth set to UP because of the refs. There were two controversial calls that you can’t make in the fifth set. You need to be perfect as a ref and I believe the fifth set loss against UP was because of them.”
