2017 FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – VIENNA

Austria’s Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst fought through three sets to take down Casey Patterson and Theo Brunner of the United States 2-1, (18-21, 21-19, 15-10). The pair forged a comeback after dropping the first set to the Americans and will now move on to the Round of 16 while Patterson/Brunner head home finishing in 17th place.

Both Doppler and Horst live in Vienna, making this match a tough one because of a number of fans that came out to see them.

“We both live in Vienna and have people here cheering and screaming for us. The last few points were so emotional… I told Clemens we couldn’t lose, not today, not in front of our fans that we love,” said Horst.

Doppler had a tremendous match, putting down 25 kills, all primarily hit from the left side of the net. He found success in all shots, which was a challenge for the Americans to read as he had shots everywhere on the court. Doppler mixed up those shots around the court to short and deep balls, keeping Brunner/Patterson on their heels. Horst contributed most of his kills from the right side of the net, putting down the ball to the left on a hard angle shot, while also finding the line deep.

The Austrians played a strong serving game, with a lot of risks taken but reward because of the strategy. Both Austrian’s committed seven service errors but combines for six aces. Brunner was their primary target on the serve, trying to keep him away from the net on the block.

The American’s kept their errors down but had much less efficient on finding the sand to dominant. They kept the ball in play but there was no risk or strategy behind their shots. They found shots around the court but did not mix it up very often, becoming predictable to the Austrians.

Up next for the Austrian pair is Jefferson Santos Pereira/Cherif Younousse of Qatar.
