Reigning Big Ten Player of the Week Carly Skjodt put together a 25-kill, 17-double double but it was not enough to lift Michigan past Illinois on the road Friday night.
Skjodt’s nearest help came from Paige Jones and Katarina Glavinic, who chimed in with nine kills apiece. Glavinic hit at a team-best .348 clip. Kiara Shannon added six kills and a team-leading seven blocks.
Four Illinois players managed double-digit kill tallies led by Ali Bastianelli‘s career-high 19. Jacqueline Quade added 18, while Beth Prince and Ashlyn Fleming followed with 14 and 13. Bastianelli put up seven blocks, while Fleming hit at a team-high .476 clip.
Illinois ran a more efficient offense, outhitting Michigan .236 to .185 and piling up 16 more kills in the victory. The Fighting Illini also boasted a 5-4 edge in aces, while both teams put up 10 blocks.
The Illini hit at a match-best .545 clip in Set 5, while Michigan made just one error in a .360 effort. The teams played to a 7-all tie, before Illinois scored three in a row on kills by Quade and Bastianelli and a Kylie Bruder ace. Michigan chipped away, tying it up at 13 on an Illini miscue. A Quade putaway and a Michigan hitting error sealed the 15-13 win.
After trailing by as many as four (12-8), Michigan turned it around in Set 1, using an 8-2 run including two Glavanic kills and three Illinois miscues to go up 16-14. The teams tied it at 16 and traded points from there leading to a 22-all score until the Illini finished off a 25-22 win with three straight points, kills by Bastianelli and Prince and a hitting error.
Illinois had two set point tries in Set 2 at 24-22, but Michigan stole away the set with a final 4-0 run, including two Illini errors and kills by Skjodt and Kayla Bair. Illinois led by as many as four early on (9-5) before falling behind 14-12.
Illinois returned the favor in Set 3, turning aside a 23-20 Michigan lead to garner the 26-24 victory. Coach Chris Tamas called timeout, icing the server at 23-20 and his team came through with four kills and an ace to seize the victory. The Illini were up 12-7 before giving up an 8-1 midset run.
Michigan trailed 18-15 in Set 4, before rallying for the 25-23 win to extend the match. A 7-0 run put the Wolverines in control at 22-18. Two Jones putaways and a kill and a block by MacKenzi Welsh guided the effort. Two kills by Jones sealed the Michigan win at 25-23.
