As the 2018 FIVB season began this week, Brazilian star Vitor Felipe had one less thing on his mind. Felipe, who partners with Gustavo “Guto” Carvalhaes on the court, nailed down another partnership in his life on Feb. 25, proposing to longtime girlfriend Naty Taveira in front of a full stadium at the Joao Pessoa tournament.
After earning the bronze medal, Vitor reportedly took the microphone and proposed to Taveira live on SporTV, saying “I beg your pardon at this time. I’m nervous, it’s harder than playing. There’s a person I’ve been with for 11 years, supported me at all times… She always supported me throughout the whole career, and I wanted to ask if she wants to marry me.”
Taviera said yes, telling Vitor and the assembled crowd “of course.”
Vitor Felipe/Guto, which finished third at the Joao Pessoa tournament, played in the Fort Lauderdale Major to kick off the 2018 FIVB season last week. The duo was knocked out in the main draw second round by eventual champions Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena of the United States.
Fort Lauderdale was the second FIVB tournament for the newly formed duo. Vitor Felipe/Guto finished ninth at both the Hague Four Star in January and the Fort Lauderdale tournaments.
