A long-shot proposal to add boys volleyball to the Colorado High School slate has fallen short in a vote taken by the athletics legislative council on April 20.
Despite the fact that more than 600 high school boys play club volleyball, the council, comprised of 71 members of the Colorado High School Activities Association, turned down the proposal for the third time.
Although the group voted against the proposal, there is one more step proponents can take in an attempt to push the sport through. There is a committee the leagues can present to in November, but there are still many votes that would have to follow in order for boys volleyball to become a sanctioned sport.
Back in January, the Equity Committee for the CHSAA announced it would not back the proposal, but the group pushing for the sport continued its drive for acceptance.
The equity committee had cited a survey which said 81 percent of school said their proportionality numbers for Title IX would be adversely affected by the addition.
The CHSAA push was made by Cherry Creek Schools’ athletic director Larry Bull, who spoke about the many athletes who participate on boys high school club teams, which have existed since 1996.
