Bruce Atkinson Resigns from Winthrop After 5 Seasons

Winthrop volleyball coach Bruce Atkinson has resigned after 5 seasons at the helm of the Eagles. Atkinson leaves with an 84-74 record at Winthrop (.538 winning percentage), which makes him the 3rd-winningest coach in Winthrop’s 29-year Division I history both by total wins and winning percentage.

“We would like to thank Coach Atkinson for all of the work he has done in support of our student-athletes these past five years and sincerely wish him the best for his future,” said athletics director Ken Halpin.

Prior to his time at Towson, Atkinson spent 3 years as the head coach of Division II Hawaii at Hilo, where he finished with an overall 69-14 record in 3 seasons, including taking the team to the NCAA Division II Tournament in over a decade. He also spent time as the head coach at the University of Texas Brownsville and prior to that at Dana College.
