Bydgoszcz Celebrates 70th Birthday With Name Change + Transfers

2018 is an important year in Poland. It marks the 100th anniversary of the restoration of the country’s sovereignty in 1918 from the German, Austrian, and Russian Empires. Following its partition in the 18th century, Poland ceased to exist, being absorbed into these other territories, for 123 years until the end of World War I, when with defeat of these powers, the country was allowed to reemerge. The 2018-19 season will also mark the 70th birthday of the Luczniczka Bydgoszcz club. To celebrate, the team is returning to its roots and adopting its former name: Chemik Bydgoszcz.

Among the news, the club’s president, Janusz Zacniewski, urged the volleyball community to celebrate and support the team after its dire 2017-18 campaign, in which it netted a 7-23 record, a spot away from relegation:

The club is now a facing a great challenge: to get our team ready to compete. We realize that without the help of the inhabitants of Bydgoszcz, this task is practically impossible. Last season, the Club had one of the lowest budgets in the League and, among other things, it translated into the place we took in the standings. That is why, on behalf  Bydgoszcz volleyball, I appeal with to sports enthusiasts: Fans, please, support our Club by purchasing tickets for our matches; Bydgoszcz businesses, please include in your marketing plans the opportunity to advertise during volleyball matches, we offer a range of promotional activities and advertising media for all types of companies from family to large corporations; We hope that there will also be sponsors who would like to support us, so that volleyball will continue to be a Bydgoszcz sport.

To start off its offseason, the team added the following pieces to its rosters:

  • Raphael Margarido, Brazilian setter, transfering out of Portugal’s Sporting Lisboa
  • Maksim Marozau, Russian middle blocker, transfering out of PlusLiga’s Kielce
  • Bartłomiej Lipiński, Polish OH, transfering out of Italy’s Alessano (A2)
  • Mateusz Witek, Polish OH, turning pro from Warsaw University of Technology
