• Outside hitter Torrey Van Winden had a double-double for Cal Poly, tallying 14 kills and 16 digs.

Cal Poly opened Big West action as the only member in VolleyMob’s Top 25 Power Rankings, and Tuesday night, the Mustangs showed why they are the favorite to repeat as champions in the conference.

The first set was all Cal Poly as the Mustangs seized control from the opening point and never looked back. The Mustangs hit .519 as a team and did not commit an error on the attack, as they cruised to a 25-12 opening set win.

The Aggies held their own in the second, including holding a 16-15 advantage at one point. But the Mustangs battled back and used a 5-0 spurt to take control of the set. UC Davis managed to save one set point before it succumbed 25-22 to Cal Poly.

Cal Poly jumped in front early in the third and cruised to a 25-16 win to get the sweep over the visiting Aggies.

LONG BEACH STATE DEF. UC RIVERSIDE 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-20)

• UC Irvine moves to 7-6, 1-0. UC Santa Barbara falls to 8-5, 0-1

• Despite winning the match, UC Irvine was outscored 95-91 in total points won, digs (76-65), kills (60-49), and assists (55-44).
• UCSB outside hitter Lindsey Ruddins led all players with 23 kills.

• CSUN improves to 5-8, 1-0 while Cal State Fullerton drops to 6-7, 0-1.
