Trinidad and Tobago tallied its first win of the competition, sweeping Chile, while the Dominican Republic cruised past Cuba to move to 4-0. Canada also gutted out a thrilling five-set come-from-behind win over Peru.
The Dominicans look to cruise to a perfect mark in Pool B and garner a bye, having not dropped a set in its four previous matches. The DR wraps pool play against Peru on Wednesday.
Trinidad & Tobago 3, Chile 0
Trinidad and Tobago dominated at the net both offensively and defensively, outdoing Chile 46-27 in kills and 15-8 in blocks in a three-set win.
Channon Thompson racked up 25 points, with 20 kills, three aces and two blocks, to pace T&T. Sinead Jack added 12 points, including four blocks, while Darlene Ramdin added 10 points, with eight kills and two stuffs.
“Chile battled for the first and second sets and then we dominated in the third set with our physical advantage at the net,” T&T coach Francisco Cruz said. “Chile plays an organized defense which creates difficulties to my team in the long rallies. We are improving and I hope we can be better next year.”
Beatriz Novoa managed 13 points, including 11 putaways, for Chile, while captain Catalina Melo added eight points, with six kills.
“As I have said before this tournament gives us the chance to evaluate and to assemble the team of the future,” Chilean coach Eduardo Guillaume said. “Physically we are very far from the rest of the teams. We need to put all our efforts in creating a group and give it continuity.”
Dominican Republic 3, Cuba 0
A balanced offensive attack and eight blocks lifted the Dominican Republic to a 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 win over Cuba.
Four players tallied eight or more kills, led by Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez’s 11. Jiniery Martinez added nine kills, while Gina Altagracia Mambru Casilla and Bethania De La Cruz De Pena managed eight apiece. Brayelin Martinez scored 13 points on the day.
“Our reception has improved and I have been able to diversify the distribution of the offensive and having Brayelin and Bethania in our team helps a lot also,” DR setter Niverska Marte said.
Heidy Casanova Alvarez led all scorers in the match with 14 points, all on kills. Regla Rainierys Gracia Gonzalez added six points, all on kills.
“It is always a challenge to go for the victory, I think my team can give a little bit more than what they showed today,” Cuban coach Wilfredo Robinson said. “Our purpose here is to develop our players and today’s match was important in that process.”
Canada 3, Peru 2
In an all-important victory that kept the Canadians in contention of advancing to the quarterfinals, the team dug deep and rallied from an 0-2 deficit to grab a five-set win over host Peru on Tuesday.
The Canadians face Chile on Wednesday and must hope for a better result and points-ratio than Cuba (2-2), which takes on Trinidad and Tobago, in order to move forward.
“I am so thrilled after this emotional victory and the ups and downs of the last two days,” Canadian captain Lucille Charuk said. “We fed up with the energy from the fans and is a big win in five sets.”
Canada won the stats sheet, putting up 68 kills to 64, outblocking Peru 11-9 and serving up six aces to two, but won the match by just three points after committing 30 errors (to 23).
The Canadians dropped the first two sets 25-21, 25-19, before rallying for the win.
Shainah Joseph tallied a match-high 25 points, including 19 kills and five aces for Canada. Kyla Richey, Jennifer Cross and Charuk each added 14 points, while Michaela Reesor chipped in 10. Charuk managed a team-best four blocks.
Carla Rueda racked up 25 points, including 23 kills, and Angela Leyva put up 20 points, including 19 kills, but it was not enough for Peru. Maguilaura Frias added 10 points, including the team’s lone two aces.
“We played two very good sets and also played well in the third set,” Peruvian coach Luizomar de Moura said. “They wanted the victory badly and were a little anxious.”
