The Olympic champions Ludwig/Walkenhorst have had their return to the FIVB World Tour ended in the quarterfinals in Rio. There, they fell to Canadian pair Sarah Pavan/Melissa Humana-Paredes in a 2-0 sweep (21-17, 21-13) on Saturday morning in Barra da Tijuca.
This is just the second lost of Ludwig/Walkenhorst’s return (they dropped 1 match in their debut on the German Tour earlier this month) from Ludwig’s shoulder surgery, and marked their 7th-straight top 5 finish on the FIVB World Tour, dating back a full year to the Moscow stop in 2016, where they took 9th.
Pavan/Humana-Paredes will face off against the Czechs Barbora Hermannova/Marketa Slukova, who beat the other German pair of Laboureur/Sude in their quarterfinal 2-1 (21-16, 19-21, 15-9).
On the other side of the bracket, the home fans will have an all-Brazilian semi-final, and a grudge match of sourts.
Agatha/Duda beat the American collegiate champions Kelly Claes/Sara Hughes 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) and Barbara/Fernanda beat compatriots Larissa/Talita 2-1 (21-19, 13-21, 15-12).
Barbara and Agatha took Olympic silver medals together last summer on the beach before splitting up and finding new partners.
The semi-finals will be played on Saturday evening.
Quarterfinals losers will each receive $12,000 per team. By advancing to the semi-finals, Saturday morning’s winners are guaranteed of at least $16,000 per pair, with the opportunity to win $40,000 as winners.
