2017 Asian Men’s Senior Championships

Japan and South Korea sit atop Pool E after Day 1 of classification matches at the 2017 Asian Men’s Championships, while Pool F is a four-way tie with three points apiece after China and Chinese Taipei won on Thursday. Pool F saw Iran and Australia awarded three points apiece based on results from pool play matches against other teams within the group.

Saturday matches between China and Chinese Taipei and Iran vs. Australia will determine the seedings of the quarterfinals. All eight teams in Pool E and F have already qualified for the final eight based on pool play.
The upset of the day came as Chinese Taipei topped Australia in four sets in Pool F, though two five-set matches highlighted the competition as Sri Lanka edged Qatar in Pool G and Pakistan rallied from down 2-0 to top Hong Kong in Pool H.

Editor’s note: The eight teams qualifying for the quarterfinals were divided into two pools. Pool E included South Korea, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Japan. Pool F features Australia, Iran, Chinese Taipei and China.

Results and points from matches between teams within a pool that have already played will be counted in the classification round. South Korea and Kazakhstan kicked off Pool E with two points apiece, while Australia and Iran boast a three point edge in Pool F due to preliminary round results.

Classification matches will take place July 27 and 29. The placing matches for ninth through 16th place are set for July 30-31. Quarterfinals will be played July 30.
