The 2018 Coastal Carolina Classic, scheduled for September 13th-15th, has been cancelled. After some initial conversation about trying to move the tournament elsewhere, the school confirmed on Tuesday that their women’s volleyball team would not be competing this weekend. College of Charleston, TCU, and #9 Pitt were scheduled to attend.
They become the 3rd NCAA Division I school to make cancellations this weekend ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Florence, which is currently expected to make landfall late on Thursday or early on Friday. Yesterday, UNCW announced the cancellation of its weekend tournament (South Carolina State, Western Carolina, Charleston Southern, Providence); while North Dakota State announced that it would not make a planned trip to play Duke or UNC.
Coastal Carolina is located in Conway, South Carolina, which is very near the coast and very near the area where they eye is expected to make landfall (near Wilmington, North Carolina). Conway is also located at the confluence of several highways that are being used as evacuation routes for other parts of the state.
Coastal Carolina are the back-to-back Sun Belt Champions, meaning they’ve also played in the last 2 NCAA tournaments. Last year, they lost in the opening round to 9th-seed Creighton. The Chanticleers were preseason favorites to win the East Division of the Sun Belt this year, but after several graduations and transfers, they’ve started with just a 1-7 record in 2018. They have not yet played a home match this year: they were 6-1 at home last season.
The team will resume play on September 21st in their first Sun Belt Conference game against Georgia State in Atlanta.
