Coastal Carolina Wins First NCAA Tourney Match In Five

After dropping the first set 25-19, Coastal Carolina fought back to win in five against James Madison for their first ever NCAA Tournament victory.

Coastal Carolina will play the winner of the North Carolina/High Point match on Saturday December 3 at 6PM ET.

The first set was all James Madison as they took the first point and kept the lead after the set was tied at 3-3. James Madison was just late in the set at 20-15, but let Coastal in within two points. They then went of a 5-1 run to end the first.

The second set started with a quick 3-0 lead from Coastal Carolina, but was quickly retaliated by James Madison to tie it up at three all. It was a close battle until Coastal went on a 6-0 run on James Madison to make the score 19-11. A few three point runs for James Madison got them back into the match, but was not enough, dropping the set 25-18. The third started much the same as the second with a quick 3-0 lead for Coastal Carolina. This time, they didn’t let James Madison back in the match, staying ahead by three or more points the remaining of the set before taking it 25-18.

In the fourth, James Madison was the team to take the 3-0 lead to start off the set, keeping ahead of Coastal Carolina by three points or better the remainder of the set, sending the match into five with the 25-17 fourth set victory.

In the fifth and deciding set, Coastal Carolina stayed ahead for all but one point in the beginning, but after that, they were in control. With the set at 7-5, Coastal went on a 4-0 run to make it 12-6. Three more points scored for each team ended the set and match at 15-9.

Leading for Coastal Carolina, Annayka Legros put down 19 kills and seven blocks, while Leah Hardeman and Tahleia Bishop each added 14 kills. In the back court, Carla Cahill picked up 17 digs and Natasa Savovic added 15.

For James Madison, Janey Goodman hammered down a match-best 29 kills, but it wasn’t enough. Taylor Gail added nine blocks, while Tilbe Yaglioglu recorded a double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs. Taylor Austin picked up a match-best 21 digs.
