Cuban legend Raydel Romero has returned to Italy after a one season stint in Quatar. He’ll once again wear the colors of A2’s Videx Grottazzolina, according to the team’s official website.

Raydel had a 4-game stint with the club two seasons ago, as he was signed in an act of desperation by the club in order for it to try to fend off relegation. It did, thanks to Romero’s amazing scoring ability even at 35 years of age, including a record 44 point performance on his debut. In 4 games and 15 sets played, Romero scored 112 points for an amazing 9.3 points per set average, which amounted to a whopping 28 points a game on a 54.9% hitting average. Needless to say, fans and staff of the team are ecstatic with his return, now for a full season. Here is how Raydel reacted:

“My return is due to the fact that all of Grotta believed in me immediately and unconditionally, with a lot of affection and support, in my first stay here. I was welcomed from the first day with open arms like a real part of the family, and for me to come back here was the first choice, a strongly desired choice. The season’s goals is to organize a contending team and have a lot of fun. Personally, as I believe for each player, the primary goal is always to win and get to make history, then we will see what happens. I will always make myself available to play, as when I arrived here for the first time. We hope to achieve a lot and to transmit great enthusiasm to the fans, to the companies that want to support us, and to the city, filling up the arena in every game!

Romero defected from Cuba in 2007, receiving political asylum in Bulgaria. He then went on to play in most of Europe’s leagues, being most famous for his days in Italy ‘s Serie A1’s Piacenza
