Recently promoted into Italy’s A1 league, Cuneo Granda Volley has announced in its official website that it has rescinded the contract of Selime Ilyasoglu due to the player failing medical exams. The 30-year-old 6’1″ outside hitter Turkish national had signed with the club in July. Here is the club’s official statement:
“The Cuneo Granda Volley Company announces the termination of its existing contract with the player Selime Ilyasoglu . After a month of work with the Cuneo medical and technical staff, physical problems were identified during the usual medical check-ups, which jeopardizes the athlete’s expected performance. We thank Selime for the commitment she has shown during this period in Cuneo and wish her a good continuation of her competitive career.”
The news must come as a shock for the player and she is yet to release a statement on the matter. Her manager Tunc Afsar, though, had some harsh words regarding the team’s decision, as was posted on WorldofVolley:
“I am very surprised that the Italian club Cuneo cut our player Selime Ilyasoglu’s contract unilaterally but I am more surprised that the reason of termination is a medical one. She started practicing with the team after positive medical checks, didn’t miss any practices, and even played three friendly games, being top scorer of the team against Novara, in a full month that she spent with the team. And the termination reason is medical problems?! I was thinking this kind of lack of professionalism can only happen in the third world countries. The case will certainly go through CEV and Cuneo will suffer the consequences of its actions. Cuneo’s behavior doesn’t fit their spectacular history in volleyball and the image of Italian volleyball.”
Ilyasoglu has 38 caps with the Turkish national team and has amassed a domestic career with top clubs such as Eczacibasi, Galatasary, Besiktas, and Alba Blaj.
