Day/Hochevar Take Back-To-Back Titles, Winning Manhattan Open

Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar are AVP champions for the second straight tournament, following a top placing at the Hermosa Beach Open in July with a victory on Sunday.

Day/Hochevar topped No. 15 seed Nicole Branagh and Brandie Wilkerson 21-18, 21-18 in the championship match.

Day racked up 19 kills and added two blocks for the victors, while Wilkerson carried the load for the runners-up with 14 kills and a match-high four blocks.

Day/Hochevar earned their spot in the finals with a hard-fought 21-14, 18-21, 16-14 win over newcomers Kelly Claes and Sarah Hughes. Day scored a match-high 32 points, including 29 kills and the only three stuffs of the match. Hochevar served up five aces. Hughes managed 19 kills and 12 digs, while Claes chipped in 16 kills, three aces and five digs to the cause.

Branagh/Wilkerson advanced to the final, rallying from down a set to top No. 1 seed Lauren Fendrick and April Ross 16-21, 21-19, 15-10. Branagh came through with 14 kills, 13 digs and three aces and Wilkerson chipped in 21 kills, a block and an ace to overcome the top seed. April Ross served up six aces and managed 17 kills, while Fendrick registered 13 kills, two blocks and an ace in the losing effort.
