Men’s Pool A

Thailand def. Myanmar 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 29-27)

Malaysia def. Cambodia 3-0 (25-18, 30-28, 25-17)

 

Men’s Pool B

Vietnam def. Philippines 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-200

 

Three-time defending champion Thailand kicked off its quest for a fourth straight Southeast Asian Games title with a win over Myanmar on Monday to open Group A action. Meanwhile, Vietnam, the 2015 runnerup, downed the Philippines to start Group B play. Host Malaysia also won via sweep, taking out Cambodia.

The men’s competition features Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia and Cambodia in Group A, while Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Philippines and Vietnam will vie for the Group B title.

Women’s action, which features two pools of three teams, begins on Wednesday. The Thai team has taken the women’s title in each of the last 10 tournaments dating to 1995, while Vietnam has been the runner up in each of the last eight games dating to 2001. Pool A features Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia, while the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam will compete in Pool B.

The SEA Games include teams from 11 countries across Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
