New Castle High School, the defending Indiana state champions, have brought on Sarah Roush as their new head coach for the 2018 season. Athletic Director Shane Osting opted not to renew their previous coach Matt Curts‘ contract, saying they were “just looking to go in a new direction.”

In looking for a new coach, Osting wanted someone young and energetic, but with enough discipline and experience to be able to lead a team coming off a state title back to the top in their first year on the job. He found that in Roush, who is a 2011 Wes-Del graduate and is very active in Munciana.

“Obviously the talent is exciting, and the future is exciting because there’s so much more I feel that we can do on and off the floor,” Roush told The Star Press. “I’m excited to help build a program for the community that everybody is proud of, and to help the girls become better people and reach the best of their ability — in volleyball and out of it.”

While it will be Roush’s first head coaching job, she’s not devoid of experience, as she’s been working full-time with Munciana for six years coaching the 15 Open Lorax. She also previously coached the JV team at Wes-Del after she graduated. At 25, she earned one of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Thirty Under 30 awards.

“I loved working with the girls and I wanted the opportunity to do that again,” Roush said. “It’s just a program that has a bunch of potential, and I saw that and I’d like to help them grow.”

Osting added: “Being a female I think is important for our girls program. She’s got a ton of experience and has some familiarity. I also think she has some great discipline. And I think we need discipline in our program.”

The team went 34-6 last fall, sweeping Brebeuf Jesuit for their first state title since 2007. Losing just two senior contributors, they’ll be the favorites to win it all once again.
