In a very surprising turn of events, Shaq Delos Santos has replaced renowned coach Ramil de Jesus as the head coach of the Philippine Women’s national team only two months after the latter’s appointment. Delos Santos himself stated to Spin.ph that he was caught by surprise with the call up, but made it clear that Ramil had already stepped down before he entered the picture.

Phillipine officials commented on Ramil’s departure:

“I was informed by friends of coach Ramil that he could no longer handle the national women’s team appointment because of commitments he had prior to our talk, so technically he did not resign. He just informed us that he could not continue. I have to respect his decision. He could not assure us of his time and schedule for the women’s national team, I’m thankful that he informed us early. The LVPI has a committee who handles coach selection for the national team. Right after I was informed that coach Ramil was off, we sat down. It was unanimous that we would prefer the services of coach Shaq if he was available.” – President of Philippine Volleyball Federation Peter Cayko

Shaq will now be tasked with commanding duties in the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia this August, the Asian Women’s Volleyball Cup in Thailand in September, and the Southeast Asian Games in the country next year. He will have big shoes to fill, as Ramil is arguably of the most successful coaches in Philippine women’s volleyball to date.
