35-year old Canadian Olympian Josh Binstock has announced his retirement after playing his final match in front of a home crowd at last week’s FIVB World Tour Beach Volleyball Finals.
Binstock, along with his 26-year old partner Sam Schachter, lost 2-1 to Poland’s Fijalek/Prudel in the round of 16 (actually 12) on Center Court at Polson Pier in Toronto.
Binstock has won 7 career tournaments for lifetime on-court earnings of $155,903. He was named the 2014 National Volleyball League MVP.
Schachter has been Binstock’s m ost frequent partner in his professional career, with the pair having played 47 tournaments together. Binstock’s next-most-frequent partner is Martin Reader, with whom he’s played 13 matches.
Binstock’s career took off in 2008 and 2009 when he won the Canadian National Championship for two consecutive years with then-partner Matt Zbyszewski.
Binstock, originally from Richmond Hill, Ontario, stands 6’5″ tall, and off the court he is a practicing chiropractor, from whence he receive the moniker “Dr. Josh.”
Binstock took the chance at the season-ending World Tour Finals to announce his retirement and was honored by the host country for his contributions to the sport in Canada.
