Eden Kroeger Burks Among Nine Inductees to Maryland Hall of Fame

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland athletics department and the M Club proudly announced Thursday the selection of nine exceptional alumni selected for induction into the University of Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2018.

Men’s basketball player Adrian Branch, women’s volleyball player Eden Kroeger Burks, gymnast Gillian Cote Cook, men’s soccer player Jason Garey, football player LaMont Jordan, fencing athlete Howard Labow, women’s lacrosse and field hockey player Karen Trudel Martellucci, women’s lacrosse head coach and student-athlete Cathy Nelson Reese and men’s lacrosse player Joe Walters make up the Class of 2018. They will be inducted on Friday, November 2 in a ceremony at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. The reception will begin at 5:45 p.m. with the dinner to follow at 6:30 p.m.

“We would like to congratulate all of this year’s inductees and their families,” said University of Maryland Director of Athletics Damon Evans. “This is a tremendous class of Hall of Famers who have made an undeniable impact on Maryland athletics both on and off the field. We’re looking forward to celebrating this outstanding 2018 class and recognizing their academic and athletic achievements.”

The M Club will also present honorary M Club Awards to Wanda Alexander, Mike Freiman, Don Pearman and Don Scheeler for their longtime dedication to Maryland athletics. PepsiCo Chief Executive Officer and former Maryland student-athlete Albert Carey will be honored as Distinguished Citizen of the Year.

“I’m thrilled to announce this distinguished group of deserving Hall of Fame Inductees,” said Executive Director of the M Club and Director of Alumni Engagement Laura Chiriaco. “Their exceptional athletic achievements brought great pride and recognition to the University of Maryland and we are honored to celebrate their success. Congratulations to our entire Hall of Fame Class and thank you for your extraordinary contributions to Maryland Athletics.

Founded in 1982 by the M Club and developed as a collaborative effort with the Athletics Department, the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame pays tribute to those superior Terrapin athletes, coaches and administrators who have made major contributions to the honor and fame of the University of Maryland, and have continued to demonstrate the positive values learned through competing in intercollegiate sports. Induction into the Hall of Fame represents the highest athletic honor the University can bestow.

Adrian Branch
(Men’s Basketball, 1982-85)

  • First all-time in Maryland history in career minutes per game (34.0)
  • Second-most games in double figures (34) in a single season (1984-85) in program history
  • Led the Terps to the 1984 ACC Tournament Championship and two Sweet 16 appearances in 1984 and 1985
  • Second Team All-ACC (1985) & All-ACC Tournament Team (1984)

Eden Kroeger Burks
(Volleyball, 1994-97)

  • First all-time in Maryland history in career assists (5,259)
  • 1997 ACC Player of the Year
  • Two-Time First Team All-ACC
  • 2002 All-ACC 50th Anniversary Team
  • Co-Captain of the 1995-96 teams that went undefeated in ACC play, culminating in 1996 ACC Championship

Gillian Cote Cook
(Gymnastics, 1999-2002)

  • Holds the best all-time individual score (39.625), bar score (9.925) and beam score (9.950) in Maryland history
  • 2001 NCAA All-American (All-Around)
  • 1999 Conference Rookie of the Year
  • First gymnast to be selected into the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame

Jason Garey
(Men’s Soccer, 2002-05)

  • First all-time in Maryland history in career goals (60), career points (140) and single season points (53)
  • 2005 MAC Hermann Trophy Winner & ACC Player of the Year, Two-Time First Team All-ACC (2004, 2005) and Two-Time First Team All-American (2004, 2005)
  • Led Maryland to the 2005 National Championship as Captain
  • Made the College Cup in all four years as a Terp

LaMont Jordan
(Football, 1997-2000)

  • First all-time in Maryland history in career rushing yards (4,147), single-season rushing yards (1,632 in 1999), single game rushing yards (306 vs. Virginia, 1999), single-season rushing touchdowns (16 in 1999) and career rushing attempts (807)
  • Totaled 18 career 100-yard rushing games, the most in school history
  • Scored 17 touchdowns in 1999, the most in a single season in Maryland history
  • First Team All-ACC and Second Team All-American in 1999

Howard Labow
(Fencing, 1973-76)

  • 1976 ACC Champion
  • Two-Time All-American and Two-Time National Runner Up (1975, 1976)
  • Four-Time All-Conference (1973-76)
  • First fencing student-athlete to be inducted in Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame

Karen Trudel Martellucci
(Women’s Lacrosse & Field Hockey, 1983-85)

  • Three-time Lacrosse All-American (1983-85)
  • Reached five combined Final Fours in women’s lacrosse & field hockey
  • Scored 135 goals and totaled 185 points in women’s lacrosse
  • 1985 NCAA All-Tournament Team honoree (women’s lacrosse)

Cathy Nelson Reese
(Women’s Lacrosse, Player: 1995-98, Head Coach: 2007-Present)

  • 11-Time National Champion (four as a player, four as head coach, three as assistant coach)
  • Three-Time National Coach of the Year (2010, 2014-15)
  • Coached seven Tewaaraton Award winners, 16 Tewaaraton finalists and 57 All-Americans
  • Two-Time All-American & First Team All-ACC (1997, 1998) as player

Joe Walters
(Men’s Lacrosse, 2003-06)

  • First all-time in Maryland history in game winning goals (13) and extra man goals (20) and second all-time in career goals (153)
  • 2004 ACC Player of the Year & ACC Tournament MVP
  • 2006 Tewaaraton Finalist and Jack Turnbull Award Winner
  • Member of three Final Four teams (2003, 2005, 2006), two ACC Tournament Championship teams (2004, 2005) and the 2003 ACC Regular Season Championship team
