2017 European Men’s Championship

Pool play is over and the playoffs begin on Wednesday, so take a quick look at who’s left and who was sent packing early.

The top dogs after round one Serbia, Germany, Russia and Belgium, which all earned a day off on Wednesday and an automatic spot in the quarterfinals by winning their pools with 3-0 marks. Russia entered the competition as the world No. 4, while Germany checked in at 10, followed by Serbia (11) and Belgium (15).

Advancing to the playoffs by virtue of finishing second or third in their respective pools are: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Italy, Poland, Slovenia and Turkey. Poland is currently No. 3 in the world rankings (through July 7), while Italy is 4. The defending champions France check in and 9, while Bulgaria (14), Finland (18), Slovenia (23), Turkey (27) and Czech Republic (27) follow. Slovenia and Italy rounded out the podium in 2015.

Heading home early were Estonia, the Netherlands, Spain and Slovakia. The Dutch (25) and Slovakia (26), Estonia (32) and Spain (33) nearly followed the rankings in their departure.

Wednesday’s playoff matches will feature: Bulgaria vs. Finland; France vs. Czech Republic; Poland vs. Slovenia; and Italy vs. Turkey. The winners advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals.

All matches will be streamed live on Facebook and YouTube in countries where no television rights have been sold. The matches will be broadcast on the CEV YouTube channel and on Facebook Live through the CEVEuroVolley account.
