The opening day of the FIVB Women’s Beach Volleyball World Tour Finals was full of quick 2-0 sweeps.

Group Standings After Day 1

Group A

Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre got off to a quick start; however, the group favorites, Kerrri Walsh-Jennings and April-Ross, have yet to begin their play. The Swiss pair would have to beat them in the final pool match to earn a bye straight into the quarterfinals.

• Forrer/Verge-Depre (Switzerland) Defeats Bawden/Clancy (Australia) 2-0 (21-17, 21-13)

Group B

Once again, the group’s heavy favorites, the Olympic champions Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst, will make their debut on Thursday with a double-header. They won’t have much trepidation over the first match, however the Swiss pair did beat the Germans in June of 2014, the first ever matchup of the two, at the Stavanger Grand Slam rather handily (21-13, 21-12); and then pushed them to three sets earlier this year.

Group C

Larissa and Talita have had the number of the Spanish pair Elsa and Liliana, whom they will play on Thursday afternoon. In 6 head-to-head matchups, the Brazilians have won 5 – none taking more than 2 sets or 36 minutes

Group D

Canada’s new hometown darlings, Heather Bansley and Brandie Wilkerson, looked strong on Wednesday against their Italian foes to win a second match in two days (the only team in the tournament who can claim that thus far). Next up will be Germany’s second pair, but the momentum is all on the side of the Canadians.
