The last four teams in the men’s winner’s bracket heading into Saturday were the last four teams standing at the end of the day. On the women’s side, an injury and three contender’s bracket wins put No. 1 Emily Day/Betsi Flint back in the field.
No. 5 Chase Budinger/Sean Rosenthal and No. 6 Ed Ratledge/Roberto Rodriguez remained undefeated in the tournament, claiming straight set wins over top seeded Billy Allen/Ryan Doherty and No. 7 Tim Bomgren/Chaim Schalk respectively. The two losing duos claimed the last two semifinal spots with tiebreak victories in the final two contender’s matches.
In other Saturday action, No. 4 seed Casey Patterson/Stafford Slick won their first contender’s match, before falling to No. 8 Piotr Marciniak/Eric Zaun in tiebreak (16-21, 21-16, 15-12), who in turn lost to Bomgren/Schalk in three sets (22-20, 18-21, 15-11).
No. 3 Trevor Crabb/John Mayer bested No. 9 Avery Drost/Chase Frishman and No. 2 Jeremy Casebeer/Reid Priddy in straight sets before succumbing to Allen/Doherty 21-18, 17-21, 15-10.
The semifinals pit Budinger/Rosenthal against Bomgren/Schalk and Allen/Doherty against Ratledge/Rodriguez. The winners will play at 4:30 p.m. ET for the title.
On the women’s side, three of the final four winner’s bracket teams made it through to the semifinals. The lone exception was No. 3 Kelley Larsen/Emily Stockman who withdrew from their last two matches. The withdrawal gave No. 2 Alix Klineman/April Ross and No. 1 seed Emily Day/Betsi Flint wins via forfeit.
Brittany Howard/Kelly Reeves played their way through the winner’s bracket, posting a straight set win over No. 4 Caitlin Ledoux/Geena Urango to advance on Saturday.
Klineman/Ross moved on with the forfeit victory.
Ledoux/Urango bounced back with a straight set win over Lauren Fendrick/Sarah Sponcil, while Day/Flint played their way into the semifinals with three contender’s bracket victories.
After falling to Reeves/Howard on Friday, Day/Flint posted a tiebreak win over Lara Dykstra/Sheila Shaw (20-22, 23-21, 15-12), and a straight set win over No. 5 Lane Carico/Karolina Marciniak (21-9, 21-17) to reach the final contender’s match, which they won due to the withdrawal of Larsen/Stockman.
Klineman/Ross will face Ledoux/Urango in the first semifinal. Ross actually played with Ledoux at the Seattle Open June 24, finishing second to Day/Flint as Klineman rehabbed an injury.
Day/Flint will face Howard/Reeves in the second semifinal, looking to reach their second straight final, after winning the Seattle Open.
