The No. 5 University of Hawaii beach volleyball team went a perfect 3-0 for the second straight day en route to capturing the Outrigger Resorts Hawai’i Invitational championship Sunday at Queen’s Beach. With wins over No. 3 USC, No. 12 Grand Canyon, and Nebraska, the Rainbow Wahine finished the tournament unblemished in six matches while also running their win streak to eight straight.

For the second time in as many days, the SandBows (13-3) took down the No. 3 Trojans (11-6). It was a dramatic win for the SandBows with three of the final points decided in a third set. With UH leading 2-1, the clincher came on Court No. 1. Playing at the top flight for just the second time this year, Emily Maglio and Ka’iwi Schucht rallied for a 19-21, 21-14, 18-16 win over Abril Bustamante and Tina Graudina. The pair were down 14-11 in the third set and eventually fought off four match points before scoring seven of the final nine points to take the match.

It was breakthrough weekend for the SandBows, who after falling to USC in 12 of the first 13 all-time meetings won two straight over the Trojans during the weekend.

In the second match of the day, UH blanked No. 12 Grand Canyon 5-0, but it wasn’t easy win by any means. After UH took a 2-0 lead with straight set wins on Courts 3 and 5, the SandBows were pushed to the limit on the final three courts. UH was down late on a pair of courts in the third set, though the team showed their resilience by rallying for the final three points. That included another comeback by Maglio and Schucht who were down 13-10, before closing out a 19-17 win in the third set.

The final match saw UH make quick work of Nebraska (3-10) for the second straight day. UH won all five courts in straight sets. Morgan Martin and Lea Monkhouse, were particularly dominant, claiming a 21-13, 21-8 win Kenzie Maloney and Annika Albrecht at the No. 2 flight. Martin and Monkhouse went undefeated on the weekend and received the tournament’s Best Pair award.

The SandBows will be back in action on Tuesday, March 20 when they host Nebraska at T.C. Ching Complex Courts. First serve will be at 4:00 p.m.
