An unexpected turn of events in Londrina’s Superliga B run. The team, which carries a perfect 6-0 record, is only one game away from clinching its promotion to Brazil’s Superliga A next year, the highest level of Brazilian volleyball. However, just three days prior to their decisive game, coach Rogério Portela left the team, citing disagreements with the team’s general management as the main reason for his decision.

Olympic bronze medalist Elizangela Oliveira, the team’s general manager, talked to the press about the surprising turn of events (Globo.com):

“There were some disagreements, so we decided in common agreement for his exit. The disagreements were related to what I think is ideal for the project. I have nothing to speak of his performance, but a conversation between us led to this decision. We decided to do this now, even with an important match ahead of us.”

Rogério also gave out a brief statement:

“We had some misunderstandings. They are related to different thoughts on how to better run the team. We were not able to reach an agreement. So, I decided to make that decision now, as I see that the team is already well set on its feet.”

Elisangela is a former player of Rogério’s. The coach, which was the leader of Rio do Sul before it folded at the end of Superliga, took most of the team with him to Londrina to make part of the new project’s roster.
