Germany’s pair of Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst took down the American grouping of April Ross and Lauren Fredrick, 2-1 (19-21, 21-13, 15-9) for the 2017 FIVB Beach World Championships Gold in an exciting match.
The win keeps the hot streak going for the German pair, who won the European Championship, Olympic gold medal and World Tour finals last season. They now add this one to their trophy case after coming back from a one-set deficit.
“I”m really, really happy that we got the World Championship right now. It’s really amazing and I can’t believe it,” Ludwig said after the win. “It was a tough match. We didn’t play good in our first game. Of course we were a little bit nervous and they had confidence which we had the last matches. We did much better in the second set.”
In the other match of the day, Brazilian duo Larissa/Talita defeated Canada’s Pavan/Humana-Paredes for a third-place finish, 2-1 (21-12, 16-21, 18-16). Although Brazil was the top-seed heading into the tournament and fell just a tad short, they still got a trophy and a spot on the podium.
“We never gave up,” Talita Antunes said after the podium-finish. “We tried to do everything we could and I think we did.”
