Iran, China Sew Up Spots at 2018 World Championships

Pool A

China def. Korea 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-23)

Iran def. Kazakhstan 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-16)

 

Iran remained undefeated in qualifying action at 3-0 with its third straight sweep, this time downing Kazakhstan, to secure its spot in the 2018 FIVB World Championships.

Meanwhile, China moved to 3-1 with a sweep of Korea to end its qualifying efforts with the runnerup spot in the group and a ticket to Italy and Bulgaria for Worlds.

Iran wraps up the tournament against Qatar (2-1) on Monday with the result merely one for the record books.

 

China 3, Korea 0

Jiang Chuan paced China with 14 points in its sweep of Korea to clinch its spot at the 2018 Worlds. The victory also avenged China’s quarterfinal loss to Korea in the Asian Senior Men’s Championship quarterfinals.

“All the opponents in Pool A are tough and there is a close rivalry among them,” Chinese coach Raul Lozano said. “So it was hard playing and qualifying in this round.”

 

Iran 3, Kazakhstan 0

Iran crushed Kazakhstan with the force of 13 blocks, while allowing just four as it punched its ticket to the 2018 World Championships with a sweep, incluidng a crushing 25-16 Set 3 victory.

Iran got 16 points from Amir Ghafour and 11 from Mohammad Mousavi in the win.
