BluVolley Verona‘s squad has been plagued with injuries this season. The team has just announced in its official website that Stefano Mengozzi, also a member of the Italian National Team, has suffered a scaphoid fracture in the team’s game against Trentino that will have him sidelined for at least four weeks.

32-year-old Mengozzi’s is a late bloomer, as his career took a while to fully develop. He spent his few first seasons jumping to and from various lower division Italian clubs, before settling in A1’s Ravenna, with which he spent 5 seasons. His performance with the club earned him his first call ups for Italy’s senior squad.

Mengozzi’s injury could not have come at a worse time for Verona. The team currently sits in 5th place of A1’s standings with a 13-6 record and is making a final push to catch up with Trentino and Modena for favorable playoff seeding and home court advantage.

Scaphoid Injuries

The scaphoid is one of the many bones of the wrist. It is approximately the size and shape of a cashew, and its fracture is the most common of wrist fracture due to its positioning and function, and are usually caused by a fall on an outstretched hand. Due to its poor blood irrigation, as the bone is almost fully covered by cartilage, an scaphoid injury can take up to six months to heal in a normal person. Because athlete’s bodies are very different than that of the average person, these injuries tend to heal faster in them because of improved blood flow to the hand.
