Kamehameha Kapalama, Le Jardin Win Hawaii State Titles

The Division I and Division II state champions of Hawaii were crowned on Saturday with Kamehameha Kapalama and Le Jardin earning the titles.

KS Kapalama bested Iolani for the title via sweep (25-20, 25-22, 31-29), finishing out a total of three sweeps en route to the title. In the quarterfinals on Thursday, the No. 1 seed bested Miliani. Friday’s semifinals saw the squad top Kapolei 3-0, setting up the final, their 15th straight championships match appearance.

The Warriors got nine kills from junior middle blocker Braelyn Akana and eight from senior outside Kili Robins and sophomore outisde Maluhia Maa in the title match. Akana also notched a team-best five blocks. Senior libero Kealani Ontai pulled up a match-high 26 digs. Sophomore outside Elena Oglivie and senior outside Saige Kaahaaina-Torres recorded double-doubles for Iolani, turning in 18 kills and 20 digs, and 16 kills and 11 digs respectively in the loss.

In the Division II title, Le Jardin topped Hawaii Baptist in four sets to secure its second straight title. The tournament top seed swept Sacred Hearts in the quarterfinals and Nanakuli in the semifinals en route to the championship match.

The Bulldogs got 23 kills from senior right side Julia Fisher and 22 from senior outside Natalie Piper in the winning effort. Both players rounded out double-doubles with 10 digs and 19 respectively. Senior libero Kailee Lyons was tops defensively with 26 digs, while freshman middle Ellie Diersbock put up a team-leading four blocks. Senior Kallie Langford notched a match-high 24 kills for Hawaii Baptist, but her nearest teammate added just eight putaways. Senior Britney O’Donnell put up nine blocks for the Eagles, but it was not enough.
