Limestone College has announced that Steve Benson has been hired as the new coach of the men’s volleyball team. Benson takes over a Saints’ team that compiled an overall record of 13-11 (12-6 in Conference Carolinas) last season. The Saints advanced to the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas Tournament before losing to Barton in straight sets.

Prior to joining the staff at Limestone, Benson has accumulated an extensive volleyball resume. He has spent time with USA Volleyball, coaching high performance teams and working as the Sport Development Manager for the Florida Region. Benson spent the last three seasons coaching the men’s volleyball team at Warner University, an NAIA school based in Lake Wales, Florida. He collected 64 wins in his time with Warner, including 24 in 2017 as the Royals advanced to the semifinals of the NAIA National Invitational Championship, losing in four sets to the Grand View Vikings. Benson also coached Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia to 94 wins.

Limestone College, which is based in Gaffney, South Carolina, will need to replace three of their top scorers from 2017 in Bruno Kretzschmar, Drew Davis, and Dylan Lavner, along with setter Luca Wanek who graduated after the season. However, the Saints return plenty of talent for the 2018 season as they look to build off their 2017 success. Kevin Rocklein, a junior outside hitter, finished 2017 second on the team in kills with 158. Junior middle blocker Julien Latard finished second on the team with 60 blocks. Senior outside hitter Anthony Savage finished the season with 82 kills including 8 in the semifinal loss to Barton. Redshirt junior setter Logan Riley led the team in total assists with 424 and will take on an even larger role with the graduation of Wanek.

Limestone will compete in the Grow the Game Challenge in Nashville in January, 2018.
