Loyola and SFU Pull Out Upsets on Friday Night: Jan. 5 Recap.

#12 LOYOLA DEF. #3 BYU 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12)

PROVO, Utah– Loyola upset BYU on Friday night in both teams’ season openers in the Smith Fieldhouse at BYU. Seven of Loyola’s players presented with flu-like symptoms.

Loyola setter, Garrett Zolg, ran the offense for the Ramblers with 46 assists and 13 digs for a double-double. Dane Leclair led the team in kills, putting away 15 balls on a .538 clip and scooping up seven digs on the match. Paul Narup also had an impressive offensive performance with 12 kills and zero errors on 14 attempts for an .857 hitting percentage. The team posted 16.5 blocks.

Gabi Garcia Fernandez fueled the BYU offense with 23 kills. He was fed by setter, Leo Durkin, who recorded 45 assists and also led the team in digs with 10 for a double-double.

 

#7 HAWAII DEF. JUNIATA 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-13)

HONOLULU– Hawaii swept Juniata on Friday night in the Texaco Rainbow Warrior Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center at Hawaii. The match lasted a mere 76 minutes.

Joe Worsley delivered 17 assists for the Warriors and Stijn Van Tilburg put away 8 kills hitting .583. Rado Parapunov led the team in blocks with 3. Hawaii came away from the match with 20 digs.

Quinn Peterson led the offense for Juniata with five kills, but hit negative on the night. Defensively, Sean Cavanagh led the way with 4 digs. Michael Young accounted for 15 of 18 assists for the Eagles.

#4 UCLA DEF. KING 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-11)

LOS ANGELES, Calif.– UCLA swept King on Friday night in the John Wooden Volleyball Classic at the John Wooden Center at UCLA. The Bruins were just two aces shy of a school record mark.

Micah Ma’a delivered 30 assists and JT Hatch put away eight kills hitting .571. Hatch also led the defense with 10 digs. The Bruins came away from the match with 33 digs and 3 blocks.

Jeff Sprayberry led the offense for King with eight kills, hitting .107. Defensively, Ryan DeLong led the way with six digs. Nick Drooker accounted for 16 of 18 assists for the Tornado.

#2 LBSU DEF. NJIT 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16)

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.– LBSU defeated NJIT on Friday night in the 2018 UCSB ASICS Tournament in the Thunderdome at UCSB.

Long Beach setter, Josh Tuaniga, ran the offense for the 49ers with 42 assists. Kyle Ensing led the team in kills, putting away 13 balls on a .308 clip and scooping up five digs on the match. Simon Anderson also had an impressive offensive performance with seven kills and one error on 10 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage. The team posted ten blocks.

Piotr Namiotko fueled the NJIT offense with 14 kills. He was fed by setter, Ricardo Whitaker, who recorded 27 assists. The team posted 9.5 blocks on the night.

 

SFU DEF. #18 UCSB 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23)

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.– SFU upset UCSB on Friday night in the 2018 UCSB ASICS Tournament in the Thunderdome at UCSB. SFU upset Stanford in their previous match.

SFU setter, Joseph Koszelak, ran the offense for the Red Flash with 47 assists and 8 digs. Brandon Buck led the team in kills, putting away 16 balls on a .294 clip. Stephen Braswell also had an impressive offensive performance with 14 kills and one error on 27 attempts for a .481 hitting percentage. The team posted 12 blocks.

Corey Chavers fueled the JMU offense with 16 kills. He was fed by setter, Casey McGarry, who recorded 50 assists. The back row was controlled by, Fredrick Spencer, as he dug up 10.
