Long Beach State leads the list as they try to defend their title with plenty of competition just in their league coming.
Thursday’s semi-final loss to UCLA marked the end of the ‘Sander Era’ for the BYU Cougars.
Player of the Year David Wieczorek from Pepperdine is among the 29 MPSF All-Academic honorees. Wieczorek and four other first-team MPSF selections: setter Micah Ma’a (UCLA), outside hitter Jack Wyett (USC), middle blocker Price Jarman (BYU) and setter Leo Durkin (BYU) also garnered All-Academic accolades.
3-seed UCLA knocked off 2-seed and MPSF champion BYU in a hard-fought four sets to advance to the National Championship Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion.
Thursday’s night cap is a MPSF vs. MPSF matchup, putting champion BYU and league runner-up UCLA on opposite sides of the net for the fourth time in 2018. The Cougars lead the series 2-1 after wins on March 3 (3-0) and April 21 (3-1) and a 3-0 loss on April 7.
BYU has been knocking on the door the last two years, falling in the National Championship match to Ohio State. The Cougars are seeking their first national title since 2004 and received the No. 2 overall seed and a bye to the semifinals after winning the MPSF regular season and tournament titles. But, Coach Shawn Olmstead said the team wants more.

Cal State Northridge earned its first Big West win and coach Jeff Campbell his 300th win by sweeping No. 3 Hawaii. Also picking up key Big West victories were No. 1 Long Beach State and No. 5 UC Irvine, while No. 2 BYU and No. 8 Pepperdine grabbed MPSF wins.
