The Peruvian newspaper La Republica has announced the death of Peru’s youth national teamer Alexandra Chocano Ríos, better known as Luz Chocano in her home country. Chocano, of only 16 years of age, was one of the country’s most promising young players. She died under unclear circumstances after attending a party with friends in the city of Miraflores. According to the police, Chocano spent the night in her boyfriend’s room after the friendly reunion. In the early morning, the boy asked for help from friends claiming that Chocano had fainted.

The friends tried resuscitating her, to no avail, and she was taken immediately thereafter to a hospital, where doctors certified her death. As of today, hospital doctors did not specify the cause of the death to the press. However, according to Publimetro, exams showed that Chocano arrived dead at the hospital, and had suffered vaginal bleeding. The source also states that the boyfriend’s whereabouts are unknown and that Peruvian authorities are working hard to clear the case as soon as possible.

Although only 16 years of age, Chocano was already playing in Peru’s senior league. The tragic news puts an unfortunate dark end to an year in which Peruvian volleyball was experiencing a revival to its 70’s and early 80’s days. 2017 saw the Peruvian national team hire experienced Brazilian coach Luizomar de Moura, saw Carla Tristán, one of the nation’s biggest promises from the mid 2000’s, came back to playing 10 years after a career ending injury, and  saw Angela Levya, one of volleyball’s biggest promises,  just signed a contract with Brazilian powerhouse Vôlei Nestlé/Osasco.
