2019 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT – MEN

Macedonian fans must be flabbergasted by what they are seeing from Nikola Gjorgiev‘s performance. The Tokyo FC high flyer took upon himself to try and qualify his team for the 2019 edition of EuroVolley. So far, he has scored 140 points in 4 matches, a ridiculous 35 points per game average on 7 points per set, including 2 40-point outbursts. Macedonia is now 2-2 after today’s win against Switzerland. The question is just how much Gjorgiev has left in his tank. Here is the day’s recap:

  • Austria vs. Portugal 3-1 (26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24) – Pool D
  • Norway vs. Spain 3-2 (29-27, 12-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-12) – Pool E
  • Georgia vs. Belarus 0-3 (13-25, 13-25, 14-25) – Pool E
  • Hungary vs. Ukraine 1-3 (26-28, 20-25, 25-19, 24-26) – Pool F

  • Ukraine’s Dmytro Teryomenko had 6 aces
  • Luxembourg’s Jan Loux had 6 blocks

Quote of the Day

All of Macedonia’s games so far at the Euro Qualifiers have finished in 5 sets – 2 wins and 2 losses. Team captain Gjorgiev knows just how much that can be problematic for the team:

“We are exhausted, but happy. It is the third game we were leading 2-0 and still had to play another five-setter. However, we played with our hearts. I think we must work harder mentally to make sure we do not give away games that easily. However, I think this Pool F is very tough. Our fans built up an amazing atmosphere here in Schönenwerd. It felt like a home game. They gave us the fire to win the fifth set. We have always missed out on big events like the CEV Volleyball European Championship just due to one point or even closer. Now we want to finally make it to Europe’s prime event.”
