Maryland Adds Under Armour All-American & Tennessee Transfer Emma Schriner

It isn’t often that a transfer occurs before a player ever spends a season with a program, but that is exactly what is happening in benefit of Maryland as they are adding former Tennessee Volunteer Emma Schriner.

Schriner graduated from high school early and joined the University of Tennessee women’s volleyball program for the spring semester. As that semester has concluded and the fall awaits, Schriner has opted to change her mind on her collegiate decision to become a Terrapin.

“We are incredibly excited to have Emma join our volleyball family,” Maryland head coach Adam Hughes said in the team’s release of the news. “Emma brings with her not only size and skill but the versatility to play in a variety of ways. In our talks with Emma and her family, it was clear that she’s dedicated to not only improving her individual game but also committing herself to the growth of our program. We’re looking forward to having her join us in College Park this summer.”

A 6’2” outside hitter, Hughes prepped at Jamestown High School in Williamsburg, Virginia. In her senior season, Schriner totaled 485 kills (5.5 per set) on a .407 mark to go with 158 digs (1.8 per set), 50 blocks (0.6 per set) and 49 aces (0.6 per set). For her time, she was named a First Team Under Armour All-American, earned countless other awards and was ranked the #60 recruit by PrepVolleyball.

It’s also the second transfer addition for Maryland, even though this kind of seems more like an incoming recruit. Schriner joins setter Nicole Alford from Georgia Tech to help offset the five transfer losses they have undergone this offseason.

Additionally, Schriner joins a group of three returning outside hitters for Maryland in 2018. Those returners come back from a Terrapins team that went 18-14 last season and 7-13 as a member of the Big Ten as they were one of the first teams out of the NCAA Tournament field.

Maybe she wasn’t sure the IU coach would stick around!

The Terps aren’t quite done. They just picked up transfer Hailey Rubino from the University of New Mexico.
