The No. 7 Lewis Flyers dominated Fort Wayne at the net, hitting .500 on the night as a team and putting up 10 blocks in a 3-0 sweep of the Mastodons on Saturday. The Flyers won the match 25-23, 26-24, 25-16.
Lewis hit .467 or better in all three sets. For its part, Fort Wayne hit just .137 on the night. The Mastodons did serve up three aces to just one for Lewis.
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Mitch Perinar downed a match-high 15 kills while hitting at a .591 clip. Redshirt freshman outside Ryan Coenen added 13 kills and a match-leading seven digs. Redshirt sophomore libero Michael Simmons also tallied seven digs. Senior middle John Hodul led the way at the net with six blocks.
Senior outside Nick Smalter led the Fort Wayne effort with 11 kills and two blocks. Freshman middle Richie Diedrich and sophomore opposite Alex Dickmann added four kills apiece. Senior setter Gabriel Quinones and redshirt sophomore outside Colton Stone each pulled up a team-leading four digs.
Lewis started the night with a 9-4 run and built the lead to nine at 16-7. Three Perinar kills and two blocks coupled with a handful of Fort Wayne miscues accounted for the advantage. The Flyers ended the set with a pair of blocks by Matt Yoshimoto.
The teams split the first 30 points of Set 2, with neither team leading by more than two during the stretch. Fort Wayne scored three straight, including two Lewis miscues to go up 18-15. The Flyers answered with five of the next six points, including three blocks, to regain the lead at 20-19. A pair of Smalter kills and one by Diedrich helped the Mastodons to a set-point chance at 24-23. Two errors and a kill by Yoshimoto stole the set away for Lewis.
Coenen downed three kills as Lewis went up 9-4 early in Set 3. Fort Wayne was within three at 12-9, before the Flyers pulled away with a 5-0 run. Two more Perinar putaways pushed the lead to nine at 21-12. A service error eventually ended the night.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Fort Wayne men’s volleyball team played its final match of the season in a 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-16) loss to No. 7 Lewis on Saturday night (April 8) on Arnie Ball Court. This was seniors Scott McNerney, Nick Smalter and Gabriel Quinones final match in Mastodon uniforms. The seniors were honored before the starting lineups to appreciate their contributions to the Fort Wayne program over their careers.
Lewis came out on fire in the first set, going on a 6-0 run early to take a 9-4 lead. The Mastodons trailed by 10 midway through the set, and the Flyers had their biggest lead of the night by taking the final two points of the set.
The Mastodons had a back-and-forth second set early on, and went on a three-point run to lead 10-9. Smalter’s kill pushed the ‘Dons to lead Lewis. Another three-point run from the ‘Dons put Fort Wayne up 18-15. Fort Wayne led by two, but could not get any further away, and neither could Lewis. The Flyers took their largest lead when they went on a three-point run to take the set. The ‘Dons hit .304 in the second set. T
he Flyers took a 7-3 lead in the third set and the ‘Dons were unable to overcome the deficit.
Smalter led the ‘Dons in kills with 11, while Quinones and Colton Stone led with four digs. Quinones, Smalter and Graydon Schroeder each had two blocks. Austin Neace came off the bench to have two service aces. Richie Diedrich and Alex Dickmann pitched in four kills.
The Flyers improve to 22-6, 13-3 MIVA, while the ‘Dons fall to 5-23, 2-14. Fort Wayne concludes its season, falling short of a MIVA tournament berth.

Fort Wayne, Ind. – The No. 7 Lewis University men’s volleyball team ended the regular-season on a high note as the Flyers cruised to their fifth-straight win with the 25-13, 26-24, 25-16 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association sweep over Fort Wayne at the Gates Sports Center on Saturday (Apr. 8).
Lewis recorded a season-high hitting percentage of .500 (46 kills, 9 errors, 74 attacks) in the win. That is the highest hitting percentage by a Flyer team since they hit .524 (39-6-63) against Lindenwood on April 10, 2015.
With the win, Lewis improves to 22-6 overall and 13-3 in MIVA play, while the Mastodons end the 2017 campaign with a record of 5-23 on the season and 2-14 in conference action.
Lewis’ duo of redshirt sophomore outside hitter Mitch Perinar (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) and redshirt freshman Ryan Coenen (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) combined for more kills (28) than Fort Wayne totaled as a team (24). Perinar recorded 15 kills and hit .591 (15 kills, 2 errors, 22 attacks), while Coenen had 13 putaways and hit .476 (13-3-21). Coenen, along with redshirt sophomore libero Michael Simmons (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) collected a match-high seven digs.
Lewis sophomore setter Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo) notched a match-high 31 assists, while senior middle blocker John Hodul (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had a match-high six block assists.
Lewis has clinched the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MIVA Volleyball Tournament and will host a yet-to-be determined opponent at 7 PM on Saturday (Apr. 15) at Neil Carey Arena.
